The fertility specialist will consider the patient&#8217;s age, fertility history, the number of embryos available for IVF transfer, and the quality of the embryos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if an IVF clinic routinely transfers more embryos than what is recommended by the ASRM, this can raise red flags by the medical board and result in an investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Putting 2 Embryos Increase The Chances of a Live Birth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to embryo transfer, more is not necessarily better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several studies have found that transferring two embryos at once does not substantially increase the chances of live birth compared to transferring two cumulative embryos, but one at a time. (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29558870\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Study 1<\/a>)(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertstert.org\/article\/S0015-0282%2813%2900402-0\/fulltext\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Study 2<\/a>)(<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32827168\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Study 3<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transferring one embryo at a time (and a second embryo later if the first transfer is unsuccessful) significantly reduces the chances of multiple pregnancies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, most fertility specialists recommend elective single embryo transfer and freezing of any remaining embryos for future use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pros and Cons of Transferring More Than One Embryo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary benefit of transferring more than one embryo is that it may increase the chance of live birth in a single cycle (i.e., you get pregnant faster).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, transferring multiple embryos increases the chances of twins or triplets, which can be dangerous for both the mother and the babies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple births are associated with a higher risk of pregnancy-related complications such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>gestational diabetes,<\/li><li>preeclampsia,<\/li><li>preterm labor,<\/li><li>preterm delivery,&nbsp;<\/li><li>postpartum hemorrhage,<\/li><li>low birth weight,&nbsp;<\/li><li>fetal demise,&nbsp;<\/li><li>neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission<\/li><li>And more.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, single embryo transfer (SET) reduces the likelihood of multiple births without significantly decreasing the live birth rate. (Assuming that up to two embryo transfer cycles are performed.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that said, IVF is an emotionally and physically demanding process. Undergoing multiple embryo transfer treatment cycles requires additional time, money, and emotional energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/alexroblesmd.com\/freeze-all-ivf\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"213\">frozen embryos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alexroblesmd.com\/frozen-embryo-transfer-timeline\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"436\">frozen embryo transfers here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are The Chances Of Twins Following A Transfer of 2 Embryos?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The chances of twins following a transfer of two embryos vary based on patient age, embryo quality, and embryo stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some reports have found that the chances of twins are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/art\/pdf\/patient-resources\/having-healthy-babies-handout-2_508tagged.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as high as 30%<\/a>&nbsp;with the transfer of two blastocyst-stage embryos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can 1 Embryo Become Twins?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A single <a href=\"https:\/\/alexroblesmd.com\/how-many-fertilized-eggs-make-it\/\">fertilized egg<\/a> can split into twins in a process called monozygotic twinning. Monozygotic twins (or &#8220;identical&#8221; twins) following a single embryo transfer are relatively rare and occur in about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33258063\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1 to 2% of IVF pregnancies.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In rarer instances, one embryo can split into three and form a monozygotic triplet pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Many Embryos Do You Need To Have A Baby?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A single euploid embryo has a 60-70% chance of implantation and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33077239\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">~60% chance of live birth<\/a>. However, it is essential to remember that these are general statistics and that every patient is unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some patients, one euploid embryo is enough, and others will need two or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your embryos are untested, you will likely need more embryos to increase your chances of live birth, particularly if you are over 35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does IVF Fail With &#8220;Perfect&#8221; Embryos?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three possible reasons why an <a href=\"https:\/\/alexroblesmd.com\/failed-embryo-transfer\/\">IVF cycle may fail despite the transfer of good quality embryos:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) Embryo quality:&nbsp;<\/strong>We cannot know if the embryo is &#8220;perfect.&#8221; Although we can test embryos for chromosomal abnormalities, there may still be other abnormalities we cannot yet test for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) Endometrium:&nbsp;<\/strong>Implantation is a complex process that involves many factors such as the uterine lining, the timing of the transfer, and the environment in the uterus, which may not be conducive to implantation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) The Transfer Technique:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;The embryo transfer is a delicate procedure that must be performed correctly to maximize pregnancy rates. Many fertility clinics use an abdominal ultrasound to ensure that we place the embryo in a good position in the uterine cavity.
